I have come to the conclusion that doing Celtic Studies is like doing American Studies with only Buffy: The Vampire Slayer as your guide. It contains all the in-jokes, slang, and statements which only make sense with the cultural background that would confuse someone not familiar with current American culture and add to that a bizarre supernatural element. Take that a couple of thousand years later and place it in front of someone with absolutely no background in American culture and see what you would get. That is Celtic Studies today. "Seeing through a glass darkly" does not even begin to describe the problems that arise. Maybe in a couple of hundred years we will have a fairly accurate view with some standard overview text books on the subject to get people started.
